Bone Resorption in the Midface Due to Hyaluronic Acid Fillers.

A rare but significant complication is bone resorption after hyaluronic acid filler injections. This phenomenon has been previously reported exclusively in the mental area, possibly due to pressure-related factors from both the filler and muscle activity. This study presents the first reported case series of bone resorption in the midface after hyaluronic acid filler injections. 3D CT scans revealed notable bone resorption in the suborbital and paranasal areas. Although previous studies have linked bone resorption primarily to the chin area, this report highlights its occurrence in other facial regions after hyaluronic acid filler use. The thin bony cortex of the midface, and proximity to critical structures such as sinuses and nerves, raises concerns about potential functional complications. This case series sheds light on an under-recognized adverse effect of filler injections and suggests the need for further investigation into the long-term effects of these commonly used procedures.
