Swollen Lips in Young Toddler During Breastfeeding Following a Woman's Botulinum Toxin Injection.
Abstract
[BACKGROUND] Botulinum toxin injections are widely used in plastic surgery for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes. However, these procedures can occasionally result in adverse reactions. The potential effects of botulinum toxin on lactation and breastfed infants remain a topic of concern.
[AIMS] This article aims to report a case of a breastfeeding mother who received botulinum toxin injections and subsequently observed lip swelling in her toddler. In addition, a review of existing literature on the impact of botulinum toxin on lactation is provided.
[PATIENTS] A case study was conducted involving a lactating woman who underwent botulinum toxin treatment. The clinical course of her breastfed toddler's lip swelling was documented, and relevant literature on botulinum toxin exposure during lactation was reviewed.
[RESULTS] The toddler developed swollen lips after breastfeeding, which resolved spontaneously within 72 hours without medical intervention. No recurrence of symptoms was observed. A review of the literature revealed limited data on the effects of botulinum toxin in lactating women and their infants.
[CONCLUSIONS] Clinicians should be aware of the potential for adverse reactions in breastfed infants after maternal botulinum toxin therapy. Close monitoring is advised, and treatment should be discontinued if adverse effects are noted. Further research is needed to clarify the safety of botulinum toxin use during lactation.
