Abstract

The life and work of the first three chief surgeons at the University of Berlin are portrayed: Carl Ferdinand von Graefe (1787-1840), Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach (1792-1847) and Bernard von Langenbeck (1810-1887). Especially that of Dieffenbach and his time is pointed out. Similarly the founder of cosmetic surgery, Jaques Joseph (1865-1934), is also mentioned.
