Abstract
Rhizoma Coptidis, a perennial herb from the Ranunculaceae family, is celebrated for its diverse medicinal properties. The primary species used are Coptis chinensis Franch., Coptis deltoidea C.Y.Cheng et Hsiao, Coptis teeta Wall., Coptis japonica var. anemonifolia, and Coptis japonica var. major. These plants are rich in bioactive compounds and are used not only in medicinal applications but also in animal feed. Rhizoma Coptidis polysaccharide(RCP), derived from the rhizome, is water-soluble macromolecule with biological activities akin to those of the plant. These include antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-Alzheimer's, anti-gastric cancer, renal protective, anti-ulcerative colitis, and immune-modulating effects. The efficacy of RCP is closely tied to their source, structure, and purity. Variations in polysaccharide preparation techniques can alter their chemical structure, leading to significant differences in both composition and biological activity. This review provides an in-depth analysis of Rhizoma Coptidis' botanical characteristics, the current understanding of RCP's chemical structure, and the advancements in their extraction, separation, purification, and biological activities. The goal is to offer valuable insights and a robust foundation for future research on RCP.
