Abstract 한글 요약
[BACKGROUND] Colorectal cancer (CRC) has remained one of the most prevalent cancers globally, and recent studies have demonstrated that there has been a gradual rise in the incidence of CRC in younger adults. Younger-onset CRC is therefore known to present myriad challenges affecting various aspects of quality of life (QOL), which remain underexplored. This study sought to examine younger-onset CRC patients' health and well-being using a qualitative longitudinal research (QLR) approach.
[METHODS] We recruited newly diagnosed younger-onset CRC patients (aged ≤55 years at diagnosis) from 2021 to 2024 via three public hospitals in Singapore. Twenty-two participants underwent audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews exploring individual experiences across key QOL domains at 1-month and 12-month post-surgery. Data were transcribed and thematically analysed, focusing on changes in patient narratives over their treatment journey.
[RESULTS] Six key themes emerged, ranging from daily life disruptions to financial stability and occupational concerns. Significant disruptions to QOL were observed initially post-surgery; most patients expressed positive adjustments and improved well-being as time went on.
[CONCLUSIONS] The findings underscore the need for tailored survivorship support, workplace accommodations, and heightened public awareness for younger-onset CRC considering this growing patient population.
